Colin Cross, contemporary luthier
We are delighted to introduce one of this country’s leading contemporary luthiers, Colin Cross. Here we feature three of a selection of his instruments we are housing at Woodbridge Violins.
Colin Cross trained with Wilfred Saunders in Nottingham from 1981 to 1986 before starting at the Newark school of Violin making. He left in 1989 with a diploma of distinction. Having worked for many established shops across the country including P.Ayres in Manchester and Hamilton Caswell in Bristol, Colin moved to Kent to open his own workshop whilst also managing the workshop of Stringers of London.
Colin has made over 150 violins, violas, cellos, and basses. He has sold instruments in Europe, USA, and Australia which are played in major orchestras and concert venues worldwide.
The violin above was made by Colin in 2019 and is based on a Brescian model from the early Italian school.
The 16’’ viola above was made by Colin in 2016 to a pattern from the Milanese school.
7/8th size cello finished in 2020. Colin modelled this cello on a ‘Landolfi’.
The above instruments form part of a stunning collection of Colin’s instruments which we are very pleased to have the opportunity to promote. If you’d like any further information on the collection or to arrange a visit to try any of the instruments please contact us.
